Frequently Asked Questions

(for SwimAmerica at the Waveny Pool & Kiwanis Park)

  • How old does my child have to be to participate in lessons?

    • Your child must be 3 years old to take swimming lessons, however, your child may start lessons in the week he or she turns 3.
  • How big are the groups?

    • We group 4 children per instructor for non-swimmers (0-2 stickers) and for intermediate swimmers (3-4 stickers).
  • Do you use floatation devices?

    • No. We believe that floatation devices prevent children from becoming safe, independent swimmers, and they can provide a false sense of security.
  • My child cannot attend lessons on one or more of the lesson days.
Can I pay for only the days he or she will be able to attend?

    • No; you must register and pay for the whole session.
  • My child missed a few days of lessons. Can they be made up?

    • No; there is no make up, credit, or refund for missed lessons.
  • Please click here to see a list of the requirements for passing each station.
  • What happens when we have "bad weather?"

    • if we have to cancel, we'll update our website showing what classes are cancelled, and we'll provide credit (not a make up) for the cancelled lesson. We ask that parents see our website instead of calling the Recreation Department or the Waveny Pool office. We can update the website from our phone, and parents can see it from theirs.
  • What happens after my child completes station 10?

    • We'll send a letter of congratulations and an invitation to try out for our age group swim team for boys & girls age 7 through 21.
  • What pools do you use?

    • We use the Waveny Pool during the summer, and back yard or condominium pools whenever they are warm enough. Lessons at the Waveny pool are open only to children who are Waveny pool pass holders.
